About me
Meet Cat Porterfield Candidate for Virginia Beach's 6th City Council District
You may have heard...
Cat faithfully watches or attends city council meetings and is becoming known for her persuasive speeches offering solutions on such issues as preserving green space and mature trees, gun violence, livable wages for city workers, and a proposed noise ordinance that could jeopardize the character of our oceanfront while heavily fining or even making criminals out of otherwise law-abiding citizens.
An award-winning print journalist, Cat and her husband Matt, created a podcast focusing on local issues and offering entertaining and in-depth coverage and has even helped bring awareness to such issues as the preservation of old growth trees – this helped influence a recent decision to deny a local car dealership the ability to level the last woods in the Windsor Woods neighborhood in favor of preservation and quality of life in the surrounding area.
While other candidates are busy popping up at all the same political events, you’ll find Cat out in the community working on social justice initiatives, supporting under-represented citizens, and fighting for individual freedoms. And she’s only getting started.

A career in active listening
Cat was a professional print journalist for two decades and wore all the newspaper hats at one point or another – reporter, photographer, editor, general manager, new media manager, publisher – she even sold an ad or two.
The majority of her career was spent at one company – an independent non-profit media company that operated as a public trust. This company represented great local, fact-based journalism that allowed readers to make informed decisions. This company shaped Cat, not just as a journalist, but as an American. She became dedicated to the First Amendment and the public’s right to know. She also learned a few things about sniffing out corruption in local government. A career like this becomes an identity – it stays in you, even if you don’t stay in it. If this sounds like what you’d like to see in a District 6 City Council member, Cat is your candidate.

A message from the candidate
It's Your City too...
You don't need to be well-connected to have a stake in this city's future. I'm digging my heels in this sand and fighting – fighting to move this city forward for all, not just the well-connected few. I want to help put the brakes on so we can stop, reassess, have the hard talks, find the best solutions, and move forward with a coastal vibe of collaboration and understanding. Please join me.
